Endurance grows step by step, with teammates and trails that make each finish meaningful.
Cross country is distance running over outdoor courses that may include grass, dirt, hills and changing terrain. Unlike track, where runners compete on a measured oval, cross-country courses vary from meet to meet. Athletes build endurance, pacing, strength and the mental discipline to manage a sustained effort over distance.
On Maui, cross country is especially visible through school competition, with courses shaped by the island’s varied terrain and weather.
Maui
Youth cross country K–8; student membership through 17
A community running nonprofit with a youth cross-country series: half-mile K–1 and 2–3, one mile grades 4–5, and 1.5 miles grades 6–8. School teams and unattached runners can participate.
Contact the club for upcoming series dates. Registration is on Athletic.net.
Kahului
Pre-K–grade 8 · ages 2–14
Five weekly age-appropriate running events from short dashes through one mile, with a Challenger Division. This is a beginner running series rather than a school cross-country team or full track-and-field program.
Register through the organizer. The full series has been $54 including fees, or $16.90 for a single day.
School teams are open to enrolled students. The athletics office can help with tryouts, clearance, equipment and practices.
